The Overlooked, Critical
Piece of Your Internet Strategy...
Maintenance is Vitally Important!
Your Site is a Refection of Your Company
- A regularly maintained site tells your visitor that your company is in
business and on the move, organized and efficient, professional and
technologically advanced.
New Customer Demands
– Today’s
customers understand that, over time, printed materials may go out of date.
However, they demand that your web site include the most up to date
information your company or organization has to offer.
Visitor Retention and Return
– An often-updated site is interesting and enjoyable and one that customers
stay at longer and return to more often. Increasing visitor retention and
return leads to increased web site effectiveness.
Enhanced Customer Relationship –
When your site is updated often, the customer begins to feel confident in
your company and the timely information you provide. As the customer’s
confidence grows the likelihood of them using your product or service also
grows making your web site a key tool in adding to your bottom line.
What is Web Site Maintenance?
Site maintenance is when text, pictures or
other content that already exists on the site is changed or updated. The
addition of new pages is considered maintenance when the addition of those pages
does not alter the overall design or navigational structure of the site.
What is a Web Project?
A Web Project is the design and
development of a new site, a complete re-design of an existing site, adding
specific functionality that is not currently present or significant changes or
updates to an existing site. Put another way, any changes or updates that go
beyond the guidelines outlined for maintenance would be considered a web project
and ITP would provide a project price for this type of work.
Cost Effectiveness of Maintenance vs. Projects
Reduced Maintenance Rates – Monthly
maintenance packages reduce the hourly cost of maintenance to well below the
cost of project pricing. (see below)
Spreading the Cost – Monthly
maintenance allows you to spread the cost of changes to your site over time
while realizing the added benefits of regular maintenance mentioned above.
The alternative is to avoid regular maintenance and do all the work as part
of a project. This approach is more expensive both in terms of actual cash
outlay and in terms of ROI when you consider the losses that can occur by
leaving your site out of date for several months.
Why Use a Professional like ITP
for Maintenance?
Training Investment – Quality web site design is not word
processing or even desktop publishing or simply graphics creation. A
significant investment in training would be required in order to bring an
individual to the point where they would feel comfortable making changes to
a site.
Time Investment
- Maintenance takes time, time that would take people away from their
area of expertise and mission critical business tasks – a situation that
could impact your long-term success. Outsourcing web site maintenance frees
people to focus on what they were hired for and what they do best.
Risk Assessment
– There is always the risk that a novice could render a site non-functional
(a worst case scenario) or do something that will cause pages to render
incorrectly (making the site look very unprofessional.) If the internal
staff were unable to correct the problem, you would still be faced with
calling a professional to correct the situation.
Software Investment – Most
professionals use specific software development packages to create web
sites. Your company would have to invest in these same packages in order to
be able to update the site.
Conclusions
Considering…
The
importance of regular maintenance,
The
reduced maintenance rates available through DTS, and
The
training investment, time investment, risk factors and software investment
involved in internal maintenance,
it’s easy to
conclude that the best Return on Investment (ROI) for your company will be
realized by provisioning your company’s ongoing web site maintenance through ITP.
